Singer songwriter, Kiya Heartwood, is fulfilling a dream by taking her one woman show, True Stories from the American Edge, to the Scotland Fringe Festival. I had the great fortune to preview the show at a recent house concert. Her performance intertwines stories and songs about Kiya, famous people, and those history prefers to forget. The concert is rich in connecting the listener to history. It’s about people who survived and lived bold lives in the midst of adversity. They invented themselves from the lives in which they had been dealt.
Using photos, songs and storytelling, the audience is exposed to the power of human spirit. The house concert environment afforded Kiya a platform to refine her performance for the Fringe Festival. As Kiya’s performance unfolded, she created a curiosity in the audience. As she finished her stories, we all wanted to know more details surrounding the lives and times on the people she portrayed. Mother Jones, union organizer, aimed at better working conditions and wages . Her words strongly stick out in my own mind: “By standing up …all you have to lose are your chains”. Still today, she asks, ” are you a slave or a man?” Do we accept status quo or or forge ahead to live authentic lives. As we were drawn into the stories, we realized as the living, the spotlight is now on us to make create a difference in our world.
